| SueW: Doctor Responds Insurance coverage is very close to 100%. Self-pay is almost unheard of. Costs include follow-up care from surgeon and from internist and gastroenterologist. These should be every 6 months for the of the patients life --this was recommended by the NIH consensus panel. Extensive tests must be run for nutritional deficiencies. Costs for vitamin B12 injections must be included. Costs that might be subtracted would be ongoing doctor visits to monitor high blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes. When well-controlled, these are no more than once a year with cheap simple blood tests.
