TEEN PODWOM!

Calling all BBTeenz! We would like your help in creating new podcasts by BBTeenz for BBTeenz and teens of all sizes! We'd like you to talk about the issues that affect you and teens like you, recorded in an MP3 file and submitted via email to us here at PODWOM.

There are some standards, of course, and all podcasts will be reviewed before posting to the website:

  1. Podcasts should be no longer than 15 minutes.

  2. Keep it professional (No profanity, no sexual/pornographic content, etc.)

  3. Focus on one topic per podcast, a "theme" of sorts, to tie it all together.

  4. Rants are okay but keep it coherent and don't slander (instead of a specific person's name, say "Person X" and "Person Y" did this or that).

  5. Podcasts of encouragement from your personal experiences are highly encouraged. Have some ideas that worked for you to make life easier as a BBTeen? Pass them along!

Send all podcasts (in MP3 format) to podwom@gmail.com

Thanks for your interest in BBTeenz and Size Acceptance!

Sincerely,
Allen Steadham

"It's dead on arrival at my desk."
- Mississippi House Public Health and Human Services Committee Chairman Steve Holland (D - Plantersville) concerning Mississippi House Bill 282

ISAA would like to thank all of you for your participation in this activism effort. The Mississippi lawmakers heard you loud and clear! Ding, dong, the bill is dead!

ISAA would also like to thank NAAFA and COFTA for their participation in bringing attention to this ill-advised bill.

ISAA Condemns Proposed Mississippi
Weight-Based Segregation Law

AUSTIN, TX - The International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) opposes and condemns Mississippi House Bill 282, proposed by Representative W. T. Mayhall, Jr. of District 40, which is "an act to prohibit certain food establishments from serving food to any person who is obese." In the unlikely possibility that this legislation actually passes, it would allow restaurants to refuse service to anyone with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 30 or more. The bill does not specify how restaurants should check for BMI but it does state that "the State Department of Health shall monitor the food establishments to which this section applies for compliance with the provisions of this section, and may revoke the permit of any food establishment that repeatedly violates the provisions of this section."

"This bill is wholesale legalized segregation based on weight," said ISAA Founder and Director Allen Steadham. "It tells restaurants to choke their own business while discriminating against potential patrons. It is obscene and shows to what extent the obsession over obesity has reached. This clearly steps over a line and should be called for what it is."

ISAA recommends that the public contact the Mississippi legislature and urge them to oppose this bill and Representative Mayhall to urge him to withdraw this bill.

ISAA strongly suggests that the public exercise courtesy when contacting Representative Mayhall and the Mississippi legislature.

ISAA was created in 1997 with the mission to is to promote size acceptance and fight weight-based discrimination throughout the world by means of advocacy and visible, lawful actions. ISAA has a philosophy of self-respect, maintainable fitness and encourages healthy food choices.

The Mission of the International Size Acceptance Association is to promote size acceptance and to help end weight-based discrimination throughout the world by means of advocacy and visible, lawful actions.

Did you know that ISAA has branches across the United States, in Canada, Brazil, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and even the Middle East? ISAA's message of size acceptance and Respect, Fitness, Health has reached millions of people through radio, television, newspapers and even through film (in the DVD edition of the Oscar-nominated documentary Supersize Me). ISAA representatives have been on the Fox News Channel, National Public Radio, CNN, Al-Jazeera, the BBC, the Discovery Channel, the Laura Ingraham Show and the Wall Street Journal's Work & Family Show. ISAA representatives have been quoted in the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Washington Times, TIME Magazine and many other notable publications, television and radio programs, both nationally and abroad.

So why all the attention to what ISAA has to say? ISAA takes a no-nonsense, professional approach to helping save lives through educating the public about health and wellness for people of all sizes as well as the realities of weight-based discrimination and who gets hurt by it (everyone). ISAA also reaches people through its online electronic magazine Without Measure and ISAA launched the world's first size acceptance online talk radio show (a podcast), The ISAA Rapport in 2002. Now, it has been followed by ISAA Pods and PODWOM.

ISAA believes that by communicating our message through interesting and entertaining mediums, in addition to public appearances and advocacy campaigns, we have the best chance of reaching the most people to give them information they might not otherwise receive or consider. This is to help empower people to make decisions for themselves, armed with the necessary information to make educated choices concerning their health and their bodies, or those close to them

RESPECT

Because you must respect yourself in order to succeed.

Self-respect and self-esteem are fundamental parts of the human psyche. They are essential keys to unlocking human potential.

When people feel good about themselves and become secure in who they are, they are able to look beyond their current circumstances and dream of a better life.

ISAA contends that every human being is deserving of a fundamental level of respect.

FITNESS

Because people of all sizes can
become more fit

Despite claims to the contrary, people do not have to become slim to become fit; it is possible to be "fit and fat" at the same time.

Basic low impact exercise such as walking and swimming can have a very noticeable and positive effect on the human body, when maintained on a semi-regular basis. As people become more fit, their chances of living longer increase.

HEALTH

Because everyone could benefit from healthier food choices

Modern work and family schedules are astoundingly fast and frantic, leaving little time for home-cooked or healthy meals. This, combined with a decrease in physically demanding jobs, the invention of mass transportation, computers, video games and the internet have resulted in less physically active societies that are also eating less healthily.

ISAA is committed to helping inform the public about healthier food choices.

ISAA Congratulates Yahoo For Making Plus-Size Messenger Avatars!

AUSTIN, TX - The International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA) would like to thank Yahoo for responding to public feedback and creating plus-size apparel and appearance for their male and female "avatars" (cute, customizable graphical representations of people) for their Yahoo Messenger instant messaging software. In 2005, ISAA made a short campaign to encourage the public to contact Yahoo to encourage the company to make avatars which represent all segments of the population, including the plus-sized.

As of today, Yahoo has made "plus-size" a category to choose from their "apparel" customization screen on the Avatar section of their website. To use Yahoo Messenger and create an avatar, one must have a free Yahoo account. Yahoo offers a variety of free and for-pay services, including e-mail, blogging, music, news, classified ads, maps and much more!

ISAA encourages the public to contact Yahoo at the link provided below and thank them for responding to what you asked for and make suggestions for even better fashion choices for males and females. We have made an impression, so let's build on it. Thanks for continuing to be involved in size acceptance. As you can see, we are accomplishing more than we know sometimes.

Contact Yahoo at the link below to offer them positive, productive and encouraging feedback. Please do not attack or flame them if you think they're not doing enough, just let them know how you think they could improve. Thanks!

We know Yahoo reads your feedback, so offer it today.

Best Wishes,
Allen Steadham, Director

Click Here To View The Study On Weight Bias Among Health Professionals Specializing In Obesity

The Rudd Center For Food Policy and Obesity at Yale University conducted a study "to determine the level of anti-fat bias in health professionals specializing in obesity." To accomplish this, they created the Implicit Associations Test (IAT) and issued it during an international obesity conference. The above report assesses the results of the IAT given at that conference and clearly shows a "pro-thin, anti-fat implicit bias" among those health professionals who were tested.
