Monica's Journal: 1 a.m., Friday, July 10th
I finally finished packing! Yeah! 3 Bags instead of 2, which isn't what I wanted, but you can't have everything you want! I'm taking some BBW magazines and catalogs to a real sweet gal I've been talking with in Italy. She's going to be the only other American in the Fatty Festival in Italy. She's been living over there for over a year, and really in need of some fat positive messages. Another thing that added to the baggage at the last minute: Rachel talked me into buying a gold sequined and beaded dress that looks brilliant! So I will really SHINE at the Festival walking down that runway! Cool!

We're leaving Los Angeles in about 7 hours, so I'm hoping to get about 3-4 hours sleep. When we arrive in New York, we'll be picked up by an FA of Rachel's acquaintance and taken to a hotel. And then it's on to a dance! I'm looking forward to taking a BIG bite out of that Apple!

Rachel's Journal: July 10, 1998
"Start spreading the news, I'm leaving today, I'm gonna be a part of it...NEW YORK, NEW YORK!" My oh my, what a wonderful day! It's amazing to me that we left LAX this morning, flew all afternoon, and completed the day by dancing the night away! In New York, of all places! The flight went off without a hitch...smooth flying all the way. It had been three years since I had been to the Big Apple...three years too long! We were fortunate enough to be whisked through town in a limousine, so I was able to appreciate the wonderful brick architecture of the antiquated houses and townhomes. After touching base with a few friends of mine, both old and new, Monica and I prepared for what was to be the first of many adventures into the deep, dark jungles of the bbw scene...Large Encounter's, here we come!...(as the roar of a lion echoes in the background...*chuckle*) We arrived at Dance Charisma around 11pm, right in time to join the surge of party people. Every shape, size, nationality, age, and personality-type were represented in this bass-thumping, smoke-filled room. The set up was great...a large dance floor... an AWESOME sound-system...talented DJ...and men! "What's that you say?" I'll say it again! Men! The ratio had to be one-to-one, men to women. That would have been fine and dandy, had any of them asked us to dance! *chuckle* Nothing like shaking your booty on a dance floor with a hundred and twenty-five pairs of eyes staring at you, half of them of the male persuasion! Good thing Monica and I aren't shy about clearing a dance floor with our flailing girations! *chuckle* If you've ever seen us dance, you know what I mean!! We met a wonderful gal names Rosie...check out the picture gallery with Monica, myself, and our new friend! Monica interviewed her, so check out the heartfelt thoughts of an energetic bbw. Finally, we were able to say a few words to the director of Large Encounter's, Mindy. She has a great group going (say that five times fast!)..best wishes to her in the future. So, we had our first taste of the New York bbw scene. All in all, it was a great evening. I look forward to tomorrow night, partying down with Goddesses!! Whew! Whew! *grin*

Well, it's actually technically the 11th, it's 2am here, but I'm still on Pacific time .

I was up packing last night utnil 4 a.m. - so I got about 1 hour of sleep before Rachel picked me up and we drove to LAX. We were seated with Rachel on the aisle, a seat between us, me, another empty seat, and a lady who was reading Wuthering Heights. No major hassles on the plane. Standard leg room and tray table stuff which was alleviated by having the extra space.

We arrived in NYC and Rachel surprised me with a Limo! The space was very nice to stretch out in, but we were dying of thirst ad there was no water or ice! Hey, that may sound spoiled to you, but darnit...that was my FIRST LIMO RIDE, and I wanted all the amenities! Oh well, we got where we wanted to go and checked in and got organized.

We started revving up our engines as we dressed for the Large Encounters dance in Queens. I must say the place really picked up about 11pm and was packed by 12:30. These New Yorker's are night owls. There wasn't much mixing or mingling going on. The music was loud and pumping, so the place to be was on the dance floor. We danced a lot, mostly with each other. The guys hung back quite a bit. I could feel the eyes on us though, so I let the music move me to the beat and really felt the energy flow.

During a salsa number we were getting really into it, and a gal came by dancing as hard as we were. I went to talk with her after the song ended. Her name is Rosie, she's in her mid-20's and has long blonde hair. She told me, "I've been big and small, down to a size 9, and people always look at me the same. People look at you for what you look like not what you are. I'm a single mom, I work a lot and it's so hard to be a woman of size in the 90's. I'm me, an outgoing, honest person. All that matters is that you like yourself. Don't try to please others."

I think that's good advice to all of you out there. I feel like we've gotten a good start, and I'm looking forward to meeting more folks like Rosie out there tomorrow night at the Goddesses dance!

Monica's Journal, July 11, 6pm New York City
Rachel has splurged on a fancy hotel here in NYC, which shall remain nameless for now, but sufice to say, Princess Diana used to stay here! I can really beleive that, looking at this room, the appointments are so LUXURIOUS.

We had lunch at a groovy NY Deli, called the Gardenia Cafe, it had a counter and we were served by all these dark handsome men. Woo Hoo. Had the greatest cantelope half with vanilla frozen yogurt and granola. We shared a ceasers salad and turkey sandwich and fries with blue cheese. Yummy! Rachel went and got her hair cut, but don't worry, it's still long! I got to engage in one of my favorite pastimes, magazine reading. Read all about Leo Di Caprio here in New York. Hey, maybe we'll see LEO here! So here we are in our great room, getting ready for another great night hanging with all the BBW's and FA's who know where it's at! Goddesses, here we come!

Monica's Journal, July 11, 4 am
We hooked up tonight with an old pal of Rachel's and went to the Motown Cafe. It was super cool there, with live music and great food. Highly recommend the Potsticker appetizer and the 'wrap' sandwiches. Rachel and her friend ordered a famous Fried Chicken and Waffle plate that they said was great, but looked pretty weird to me. We had a great waiter named Josh, who's going to be touring nationally with the American Family Values Theater, playing Mary's boyfriend in Babes in Toyland. Hope we'll get to hook up with him when he comes to California. See his pic in the gallery. He was very interested in our tour, he told us he'd been big his whole life and recently lost 85 pounds. He looks great and is a very nice guy. ;)

So after dinner and a few drinks, we headed out to the party we came out here for. Midori sour is my favorite and Rachel actually had a couple of Strawberry Daquiries instead of the usual Shirley Temples. So we got to GODDESSES at the China Cafe after an "E Ticket" taxi ride-just like I'd always heard about, fast, bumpy and swerving all over the place...and were greeted by two big guys at the door. Looked like very good security and I was impressed to see them 'wired for sound' with earphones just like the Secret Service. :) We met some nice folks there and danced and drank and danced some more! I talked to a couple of nice men, whom I hope will keep in touch throughout the trip. I can see why the group is so popular, one bbw I spoke to had come up from North Carolina, and she said there are always lots of new people and a few regulars. In my experience in California, the bbw scene is reversed, lots of regulars and a few new people. The guys at this dance seemed to be more interested in making connections and dancing, I didn't see them hanging out together like at the Large Encouners dance.

We're gearing up for a big day out on the town tomorrow, so I've got to get some sleep!

"Dance, boogie wonderland, ah...ah...dance, boogie wonderland!" Nothing like dancin' the night away two nights in a row! My tootsies are beginning to tire. *chuckle* We moved to another hotel mid-afternoon, The Hotel Plaza Athenee. I had stayed here on a previous trip to New York. It's an outstanding place to stay. The room, which was an upgrade, was not quite ready when we arrived, so we set off to find an ATM, food, and who knows what else. The ATM was a snap, the food was great, and the "who knows what else?" WELL, let me tell you...! I saw a beauty and hair salon on the street we were walking on and thought, "It's now or never." We were greeted by a friendly staff who enjoyed my devil-may-care attitude. "Do what ever you think will be best." A stylists dream! *chuckle* She did a wonderful job, chopping off 5 inches of hair. Yes, it's still long and to my mid-back, but boy does it feel great! Yea! We met up with an old performer friend of mine from dinner theatre days. It's amazing how so much time can pass, yet you can start up the conversation like no time had elapsed. After having a blast at the Motown Cafe (recommendation: chicken and waffles...hmmmmmmm! *grin*), we headed to the China Cafe where Goddesses hold there dances every Saturday night....to be continued.

Rachel's Journal, July 12, 1998 (Con't)
Where did I leave off...oh, the Goddesses dance! The club atmosphere that the BBW scene has out here is amazing! Very urban...very main stream. I noticed quite a few women who were really tall...over 5'10. The men were in abundant supply at this dance, also. During the evening, they had a male dance contest. Whew, let me tell you! Those boys were movin' and groovin' like there was no tomorrow! At one point, it seemed like a male revue dance show...all these buttons and zippers coming undone. *chuckle* The women ATE IT UP! The contest, that is! *chuckle* So, we've had two wonderful experiences with the BBW scene here in New York. I'm looking forward to the wonderful adventure ahead of us!

Rachel's Journal, July 12, 1998 (Con't)
Sunday, 7/12: It's amazing that I'm actually writing this the day of...I've been getting to bed so late that I've watched the sun rise the past three days! I like the sun and all, but this is ridiculous! *chuckle* Another late night equals another late morning.

We headed out to meet my old friend at the TCKTS booth on Broadway, right in the center of town. The booth is a clearing house for shows to be seen that day. We saw "Bring In Da' Noise, Bring In Da'. Funk." Boy, these boys could dance! Non-stop foot action happening there!

We strolled down Broadway, windown shopping, digital camera shopping, people watching, and saying farewell to my friend. They weren't kidding when "they say the neon lights are bright on Broadway."

For the evenings entertainment, we headed over to the Stardust Cafe where the show, "Forbidden Broadway" is playing. The cabaret-type show spoofs Broadway musicals and the actors/actresses in them. It was a hoot! *chuckle*

I noticed that in both musicals, the lead female performers were bbw's. It is so refreshing to me, seeing these talented women basking in the adjulation thay deserve. The more positive, confident, talented BBw's there are for the world to see, the better. Show 'em your stuff, you sexy, vivacious girl, you! *grin*

Plans for the days ahead change like the wind. Who knows when and where we'll be the next couple of days. As you know, we'll keep you posted!
