ISAA Receives Thanks From The White House

On May 22, 1997, I wrote the following letter to U.S. President Bill Clinton:

Dear President Clinton,

I was truly pleased to hear about your stance on the modelling industry's glamorization of the "heroin look." I think it's time someone in a high position such as yours said "enough's enough!" Not only do these models endanger their own lives by starving themselves, but they are the role models of their generation of young impressionable girls. Besides glorifying heroin use, these models are also being used to send unhealthy body images of what's cool and hip these days.

My name is Allen Steadham, and I am the director for a new non-profit organization, the International Size Acceptance Association (ISAA). The main goal of this organization is to help people of all ages, all races, and all sizes have an opportunity to learn a healthy approach to life. ISAA exists to help people reach a point of self-acceptance, because not everyone is genetically designed to look as thin as supermodels Cindy Crawford or Naomi Campbell. It is our belief that people shouldn't degrade themselves or others because they don't fit someone else's view of what's "healthy."

ISAA is a support organization and an educational organization. I know that even you, sir, have been a victim of size discrimination in the media at times. Another of ISAA's goals is to provide the public with accurate medical information regarding the hazards of yo-yo dieting, what is a "healthy" weight, and obesity. Much discrimination is due merely to ignorance.

The purpose of this e-mail, Mr. President, is to let you know ISAA exists, and we are impressed by your stance on this very critical topic of the imagery being presented by various factions of the modelling world and its impact on today's (and tomorrow's) women in America, and the world. Perhaps ISAA may be of assistance to you at some time in the future, and perhaps ISAA might be an organization you might consider being a part of.

Should you have any questions, I am only a reply away.

Thank you for your time. Have a lovely day.

Director, ISAA

On May 24, 1997 I received this e-mail auto-response from the White House:

Thank you for writing to President Clinton via electronic mail. Since June, 1993, whitehouse.gov has received over one million messages from people across the country and around the world.

Because so many of you write, the President cannot personally review each message. The mail is first read by White House Correspondence staff. Your concerns, ideas, and suggestions are carefully recorded and communicated to the President weekly with a representative sampling of the mail.

We are excited about the progress of online communication as a tool to bring government and the people closer together. Your continued interest and participation are very important to that goal.

Sincerely,

Stephen K. Horn
Director, Presidential Email
The Office of Correspondence

I didn't expect to receive anything else after that.
So imagine my surprise when I received the following letter:
